Protect Yourself From Fraud
Tips to help spot, and prevent, common fraud attempts.
Consumers lose billions of dollars each year due to fraud, and the Federal Trade Commission says it’s only getting worse. Through AI, a lot of these attacks are becoming harder to spot. So what can we do? Below are five common fraud tactics seen throughout the industry, and ways to protect yourself against them.
Debit Card Fraud
Keep your card information secure by never sharing your PIN and using secure payment methods (avoid suspicious websites or conducting purchases over public Wi-Fi). Set up card controls through mobile banking to enable/disable your car ad any time and enable notifications/alerts to your device whenever your card is used. Be sure to frequently check your statement accounts and report any discrepancies immediately.
Spoofing & Phishing
If you ever receive a text, email, or phone call from someone you don’t know asking for any banking or personal information, do not give it to them. Hang up and call your bank directly.
Check Fraud
Minimize mailing checks as they can be stolen and altered. Review your account statements as soon as they become available and review images of your checks online to ensure the payees are your intended payees. Report any discrepancies to your bank.
Mail Fraud
Examples of mail fraud might include notices of prizes, sweepstake winnings, past due taxes, unclaimed tax credits, etc. As always, never provide payment or personal information, and do not call the number listed on the piece of mail. Instead look up the number on the verified website the mail claims to be from, and verify the legitimacy of the mailing.
